Transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease to a chimpanzee by electrodes contaminated during neurosurgery.

چکیده
Stereotactic multicontact electrodes used to probe the cerebral cortex of a middle aged woman with progressive dementia were previously implicated in the accidental transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) to two younger patients. The diagnoses of CJD have been confirmed for all three cases. More than two years after their last use in humans, after three cleanings and repeated sterilisation in ethanol and formaldehyde vapour, the electrodes were implanted in the cortex of a chimpanzee. Eighteen months later the animal became ill with CJD. This finding serves to re-emphasise the potential danger posed by reuse of instruments contaminated with the agents of spongiform encephalopathies, even after scrupulous attempts to clean them.

Evidence for case-to-case transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Three cases of probable iatrogenic transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease by neurosurgery are detailed together with a cluster of three cases in Eastern England possibly connected by dental procedures, and the development of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in a patient who had been in social contact with a familial case.
متن کاملVariant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Current evidence indicates that variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is caused by the transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans. The clinical and investigative features of variant CJD are relatively distinct from sporadic CJD and the neuropathological appearances are novel. The number of cases of vCJD in the UK may have peaked, but the total future number of cases of vCJD is uncer...
متن کاملCreutzfeldt-Jakob disease: A case report
Background: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) as a life-threatening neurodegenerative disorder is not usually diagnosed in early stages of the disease because of a variety in its clinical manifestations. This study aimed to present a middle-aged woman with psychiatric symptoms who ultimately was diagnosed as a CJD case. Case presentation: This 48-year-old woman had progressive symptoms of depres...
متن کاملNeurosurgery in a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease after pituitary derived growth hormone therapy in childhood.
The case of a young man who had previously received pituitary derived growth hormone for treatment of radiation induced growth hormone deficiency is reported. He underwent neurosurgery for presumed recurrence of a posterior fossa tumour but was subsequently shown to have Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, confirmed on necropsy. The risk of transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease by neurosurgical inst...
متن کاملEpidemiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in England and Wales.
Some aspects of the epidemiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in England and Wales in the decade 1964-73 were studied with the object of detecting evidence of natural transmission of this slow virus encephalopathy. Some geographical clustering and possibility of contact between cases was found.
